A Passionate Dental Assistant's Journey
Honorary Student: Nima Barvasad
September 2025
In the world of dentistry, commitment and compassion are essential components that help practitioners provide excellent care to their patients. Nima Bavarsad, a dedicated dental assistant with nearly six years of experience, embodies these values. We had the opportunity to sit down with Nima and learn about his journey, the challenges he faced, and his aspirations for the future.
Nima graduated from Portland Community College’s Dental Assisting Program in 2019. His fascination with dentistry began during high school when he participated in the Dental Career Explorer Program at OHSU School of Dentistry. This seven-month program allowed students to engage with various dental specialties through lectures and hands-on lab activities. “I was able to wax teeth with dental students and discuss dental school with them. It sparked my interest in the field,” he recalls. After high school, Nima enrolled at PCC to fulfill the prerequisites for dental assisting, setting him on the path toward his current career.
As a first-generation American and the first in his family to pursue higher education in the United States, Nima had to navigate the educational system independently. “My biggest obstacle was not having anyone to guide me. I had to carve my own path,” he explains. This determination to succeed has played a significant role in his journey.
Nima believes that while technical skills like manual dexterity and attention to detail are important, the most vital traits for a clinician are humility, compassion, and a willingness to learn. “I’m passionate about mastering my craft, but I also know that I don’t have all the answers. That’s why I value continued education – to better serve my patients,” he says.
Support plays a crucial role in Nima's achievements. “I’m blessed with a solid support system. My family, partner, and friends encourage me and reassure me whenever I feel overwhelmed,” he shares. A particularly special moment for him was restoring his parents’ teeth during his restorative continuing education course last summer.
What Nima enjoys most about his work as a dental assistant is the ability to ease patients' anxieties. “Many people are scared of dental appointments. When a patient expresses relief, saying, ‘That wasn’t so bad,’ it makes everything worthwhile,” he explains. Nima also loves the variety of procedures he assists with, which keeps him engaged and knowledgeable.
Among his proudest accomplishments are becoming certified in restorative and local anesthetic functions. Looking to the future, Nima aims to attend dental school to further his education and career. “I’m almost finished with my pre-dental prerequisites and my Bachelor’s degree, majoring in public health. I love being a dental assistant, but I aspire to prep teeth myself one day,” he shares with enthusiasm.
Nima feels fortunate to have opportunities to positively impact his community. He sees dentistry as more than just a job; it’s a vocation filled with purpose. “I strive to help patients out of pain and make them feel comfortable. I once worked with a pediatric patient who had a medical phobia. Through patience and gentle communication, I successfully took radiographs and performed a prophylaxis. Receiving positive feedback from the patient’s mom was incredibly fulfilling,” he recounts.
To those new to the field or considering a career in dental assisting, Nima offers words of encouragement: “Never give up, and don’t let setbacks define you. One of my favorite proverbs is, ‘Fall down seven times, stand up eight.’ Resilience is key.” Nima emphasizes that achieving worthwhile goals requires hard work and commitment, urging others to dream big while keeping their focus grounded. As Nima continues his journey in dentistry, his dedication to learning and serving others stands as an inspiration. With his compassionate spirit and determination, he is poised to make a lasting impact in the field and the community.
Overcoming Adversity and Discovering a Passion for Dentistry
Honorary Student: Daniel Silva
July 2025
In a world where challenges can often deter ambitions, Daniel Silva stands out as a beacon of resilience and dedication. A recent graduate of the Portland Community College Dental Assisting Program in 2025, Daniel has navigated an extraordinary journey into the field of dentistry, and his story is truly inspiring.
When asked what first attracted him to the field of dentistry, Daniel shared his deep appreciation for the connection between mental health and dental care. “The psychology aspect of it is fascinating. I’m passionate about mental health, and I see how dentistry complements that. It just clicked one day, and the more I learned about it, the deeper my desire to explore the field grew.”
Daniel's passion stems not only from his interest in patient care but also from his strong commitment to mental health awareness, which is essential in fostering trust and comfort in a healthcare environment. Every journey has its challenges, and Daniel's has been no exception. “Discrimination due to my background, despite being at the top of my class, has been tough. I faced specific hurdles because of my disability and the policies surrounding it. I had to work harder to find my own externship opportunities and juggle multiple jobs while managing my studies,” he shared candidly, reflecting on the obstacles he overcame to achieve his goals.
His determination is evident: “I’m supporting myself financially, working three jobs, running my own registered business, and completing 27 classes over the past nine months. Not to mention passing three board exams!” When discussing the traits that have been instrumental in his journey, Daniel highlights perseverance, optimism, humility, and empathy. “I have a depth of character that comes from experiences many others have not faced. I believe these traits have allowed me to navigate my challenges more effectively,” he explained.
Reflecting on his greatest accomplishment, Daniel said, “Graduating for all the people I love who believed in me was monumental. I didn’t want to let them down.” A pillar of strength for Daniel has been his family and friends, who have played a crucial role in his journey. “They’ve been very emotional and supportive. I’m first-generation, and nobody in my family has pursued this path. My older brother, my mother, my stepdad, and mentors like Sylvan Weber, Dr. Michael Moody, and Dr. Monica B. Kowalski have all been incredible supporters,” he said, a smile lighting up his face.
For those considering a career in dental assisting, Daniel offers wise advice: “Have a support system in place. Don’t cut corners, and make the most of every day at your externship. Learning as much as possible while in school prepares you for what lies ahead.” Finally, he underscores the importance of professional organizations like the ODAA. “Yes, it’s essential to be a member. Staying updated through emails and continuing education opportunities keeps you in the loop as you advance in your career.”
Daniel Silva is a symbol of resilience, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to providing quality patient care. His journey, marked by hard work and a deep passion for mental health awareness, exemplifies the spirit of the dental healthcare profession. As he embarks on this new chapter, there is no doubt he will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of many, ensuring that each patient feels seen, heard, and cared for.
From Stay-at-Home Mom to Dental Assistant
Honorary Student: Arin Carter
January 2025
Arin Carter, a proud graduate of Central Oregon Community College's Dental Assisting program in 2024, has embarked on a fulfilling career in the dental field after years of dedicating herself to her family. Her passion for dentistry stems from a long-standing enjoyment of visiting the dentist, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in a field she finds intriguing and rewarding.
“I always enjoyed going to the dentist, and dentistry captivated me,” Arin shares. Though she had contemplated working in a dental office for some time, it wasn't until she was ready to return to the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom that she seized the opportunity to make her dreams a reality. With a desire to help people and find a role with flexible hours, she navigated her way into dental assisting.
Transitioning from being at home full-time with her children to entering a formal work environment was not without its challenges. Arin acknowledges that it was difficult for both her and her children to adjust to this change. However, the support from her family made a significant difference. “They've always been there for me, asking questions about my work and cheering me on,” she recalls.
Arin also faced professional obstacles, particularly the task of learning new skills at a later stage in her life. Despite the excitement she felt, she knew that discipline and hard work were essential to mastering the knowledge required for her new profession. Her personal traits of compassion, humility, discipline, and an eagerness to learn have undoubtedly played a role in her success.
Her family couldn't be prouder of her accomplishments, especially her husband, who has been her biggest supporter throughout her journey. “He is so proud of what I have achieved, both as a student and now as an assistant,” she says with pride.
Today, Arin thrives in her role as an oral surgery assistant, where she enjoys the opportunity to interact with patients and guide them through every step of the process, from consultation to surgery and post-operative appointments. She appreciates the camaraderie of her colleagues, describing her workplace as a dental “family.”
Currently, Arin is preparing for the DAANCE (Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination). She is determined to pass the exam and become DAANCE certified, which would enable her to administer IVs and support oral surgeons during hospital calls.
Her advice to others considering a similar path is to ensure they not only enjoy the work they do but also enjoy the people they work with. “When you find your dental 'family,' it makes doing what you do so much more enjoyable,” she says enthusiastically.
Arin Carter's journey from stay-at-home mom to dental assistant is a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and following one’s passion. She serves as an inspiration to many who seek to make a significant change in their careers while balancing personal commitments.
Arin Carter graduated from Central Oregon Committee College Dental Assisting, in 2024.

As the dental assisting program at Central Oregon Community College progresses through the fall 2025 cohort, one student's journey stands out as a testament to perseverance and ambition. Ms Brisa Ramirez was raised in a predominantly Spanish-speaking family, she was motivated to pursue dental assisting after a childhood visit to a pediatric dentist, where a Spanish-speaking dental assistant facilitated communication between her mother and the staff. This experience fueled her passion to be a similar link for others seeking dental care.
At first, Ms. Ramirez struggled with self-doubt, but she overcame her fears through positive affirmations and took the important step of enrolling in the program. Known as a "people person," she excels at building connections with both patients and colleagues.
